The beginning

Sharing these paintings on Facebook and Instagram, they soon inspired others to follow suit and do the same. Quickly we were a group painting daily, supporting each other, keeping our sanity and anxiety in tact with this simple task. Paint. Paint whatever. Paint freely.
The message was to use what you have and also, to share what you have created in a safe space – no judgement.
We kept up with the commitment for #21days, some even continued long after. Some got inspired to pick-up watercolours, buy paint and is still keeping up with the daily practice.
The #coffeepaintings during the first #21daysoflockdown helped us all in different ways. But it did not feel like enough.
The auction
Towards the end of lockdown Level 4, a selection of #coffeepaintings from contributors were then listed and put up for auction on this site for 24 hours. Bidders were able to place a bid on your favourite(s). All proceeds went to shortlisted feeding schemes and charities close to our hearts. In addition, 10% of all sales made across the site during the 24 hours auction were donated to these charities. We raised close to R10 ooo in 24 hours.
What else?
The “movement” also brought an opportunity and an urge for me to open my website to other artists wanting to showcase their work and sell their art. We have since listed more the 100 pieces of art, ranging from Coffee paintings, Watercolour, Photography, Mixed medium and Acrylic Pouring. We have had sales from France, England, New Zealand, The Netherlands, The Caribbean, South Africa and Botswana.

Seraphine
According to Google she is a six winged angel that guards the thrown of God. She is characterised and usually described as beautiful, sweet, caring, sexy, honest, romantic. A woman who keeps her head up through hard times. No matter where life takes her she keeps a smile on her face. Usually described as strong. She learns from life experiences and lets them build her up.
But to me she is a little moody, probably French. And she threw a typewriter from her apartment window on the second floor. Her heart crumbles for Cadbury’s.

Crescent Moon
This is not the first girl dangling of the moon I have painted, but definitely the favourite. A bit of a risk taker that enjoys a good view and fresh air in her hair. Crescent Moon is by far my favourite moon, especially slightly on its back, with the evening star in sight. This one is mystical and happy with the changing of the seasons, ebb and tide. She can easily pull herself up and take a seat on the moon, sitting on the edge, or lean back and enjoy some stargazing in the comfort of the arching moon.

Victor Hugo
This one was painted on Day 7.
When I posted the “Crescent Moon” on the Sunday prior, I received a message from a stranger asking if I knew Hugo Victor was as much a painter as a writer. I didn’t. He is most famous for his work Les Misérables and The Hunchback of Notre-Dames and considered to be one of the greatest and best-known French writers (1802 -1885, Paris). I opened the link she sent me, and to my surprise, I learnt that Victor Hugo made drawings and paintings with coal, dust & … you guessed it: coffee. I was obviously immediately fascinated.
He had more than 4000 drawings and paintings, hardly ever shown to the world.

Hugo worked only on paper, and on a small scale.

He sometimes drew with his non-dominant hand or when looking away from the page.
Needless to say, the stranger brought the most inspiring message in a very strange time, showing just how connected we all are.
In the link Emma shared, the first painting on the article was one of an octopus. This mystical creature and symbol has made its way into my life in more than one surprising way and has been incredibly prominent in the last two years. I obviously, on Day 7, I had to paint one too. His name is Victor.
The story continues and his journey is not completed. One of our good sailing friends, Jeremy Bagshaw, won the bid on Victor. I since learnt that Victor will be joining Jeremy on his solo race around the world as he joins the Golden Globe Race in 2022.
